Kashmir Chapter 4 : Ancient  Hindu Temples

Amidst the frost-kissed landscapes of Kashmir, we all had a chance to visit much-revered Mohineeshwar Temple and Shankaracharya Temple, where history and spirituality intertwine amidst snowy splendors.

Mohineeshwar Temple (commonly referred to as Shiv Temple of Gulmarg) was built by a Hindu ruler Maharaja Hari Singh for his wife Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia who ruled till 1915. The historic temple is devoted to Lord Shiva.  The temple is devoted to Shiva and Parvati. This temple is situated on a small hill top which is covered with snow during the winter season. This Mohineeshwar temple or Maharani temple is visible from most parts of Gulmarg, and just 10 minutes walking distance from famous Gondolas of Gulmarg. We had priest do a mini holy ritual, and it was blissful. We walked up about two dozen stairs to reach the inner sanctum, but came down on a sledge, which was quite fun.

Shankaracharya Temple: The Shiva Shankaracharya Temple, located atop the Shankaracharya Hill in Srinagar, is a revered Hindu Temple in the Kashmir Valley. Dating back to the 9th century, this ancient temple holds great significance in Hindu history.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is believed to have been established by the great philosopher and saint, Adi Shankaracharya, during his visit to Kashmir. Its location on the hill offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley, adding to its spiritual allure.

The temple architecture reflects a blend of Hindu and Kashmiri styles, with intricate carvings and stone structures that stand as testaments to the rich cultural heritage of the region.  In addition to its religious and spiritual importance, the temple holds historical significance as one of the oldest surviving structures in Srinagar.

There are about 243 steps to scale to reach the inner sanctum, few of them are little steeper.  However, given the pleasant breeze, it was effortless to reach the top.  We also stepped into the cave, where Shankaracharya Saint has meditated.
